Course Description:

The course topic outline will follow the NC Guidelines for Earth and Environmental Science. Topics include geography, geology, meteorology, oceanography, and some application of the Earth’s interaction with life (ecology).
The daily schedule will be a combination of:note-taking with visual aids, handout or webquest class activities, labs, and videos; using our chromebooks whenever possible. Our information sources include; our discovery education techbook, a supplemental techbook, & a classroom textbook & workbook.
Generally, homework is the completion of work that was not finished during class time. Preparing for a test or quiz will require additional study time.
Classwork/homework assignments turned in late will be accepted up to one week late but for half credit (at best). Assignments missed due to absence(s) are to be turned in immediately upon return (as a general rule, one day allowed for each day missed).
Tests & quizzes are announced in advance and are to be made up the day a student returns to class or the following day (student’s choice). Extended absences may require more time. .
Students are expected to report to class each day on time, with necessary class materials (listed separately), sit in their assigned seats, & to have their fully charged chromebook & earphones with them. All notes, documents, and classwork will be kept in their earth science folder (created in their chromebook) or in their 3-ring binder.

  • 3-ring binder (small)
  • # 2pencils orblue/black pens
  • colored pencils– set of 5-10
  • chromebook- charged daily
  • scotch tape, glue, & scissors

Evaluation and Grading (point system):

tests – approx. 35-45 pts. each; final exam is 20% of course grade
quizzes – 10-20 pts each; approx..half of each unit's content
classwork/homework – 2-3 points each; 2-3 assignments often combined in powerschool
labs – graded with same point totals (2-3 pts each) as classwork/homework
extra credit – points awarded at teacher's discretion


Classroom Policies:
  1. Stay in your assigned seat unless you have teacher permission
  2. Do not disrupt class by talking out loud without permission, throwing things, etc.
  3. Follow School & Classroom Rules: a) respectful - to teacher & other students; b) bathroom policy not abused - one at a time, not daily, 10 min rule at start & end; c) cell phone & music - in bag & turned off unless granted permission by teacher, d) no food or drink (water is permissable).

Grade Notification:
Grades can be viewed by parents & students in PowerSchool. A student's most recent work may require up to a week before appearing in PowerSchool. Also, progress reports will be sent home twice (at the midway point of each grading period). Please e-mail or phone with concerns.
